kids books: a steal from National Book Store!

Image
I spent more than half of the day in the mall today. I went to the dentist for another filling and I also got my dental application, something I have to wear every night to help correct my bite and keep my teeth from falling apart. I had lunch alone then went for a facial. I cherish my me-time but I also feel a bit guilty each time I spend some hours of the weekend away from my husband and kids. To banish my guilt, I decided to drop by National Book Store for some pasalubong . I gathered from the NBS Facebook page that they're having up to 70% off their books from August 30 to September 8. I went home happily carrying two books for the kids - a steal at 70% and 50% off! Asian Children's Favorite Stories A Treasury of Folktales from China, Japan, Korea, India, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia as retold by David Conger, Kay Lyons, Liana Romulo, Joan Suyenaga and Marian Davies Toth Illustrations by Partick Yee I got it for P430.50. Original Price is P1,435. That...

how to deal with jealousy and sibling rivalry?

Image
Our 4 year old had a sudden outburst the other day that left me in shock. Me: Don't hit your brother with the pillow. He's just a baby! TL#1: No, I want to kill him. I want him to die! Shucks! Me (as calmly as I could): No of course not. You don't mean that. Part of me was scared and wanted to deny what I heard. TL#1: No, I want to kill him. I was supposed to scold him and tell him that was a bad thing to say but I stopped myself. I realized I was not acknowledging his feelings. I was trying to invalidate them with my words. Good thing I read a few pages of the book How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk . The book gives the following first aid to help a child in distress: TO HELP WITH FEELINGS 1. Listen with full attention. 2. Acknowledge their feelings with a word - "Oh". . ."Mmm". . . "I see." 3. Give their feelings a name. Here's a sample illustration from the book (click to enlarge). 4. Give them their wishes in f...

Bible reading (Veggie Tales style)

Image
One of the things I want to tick off my bucket list is to read the bible from cover to cover. I have read all Harry Potter and Percy Jackson books, Hunger Games, Twilight Saga, Games of Throne and Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy, among others. It should have been an easy feat for me to finish reading the Bible. Last week while looking for anything dinosaur for TL#1 in Dash of Fun store in Greenbelt 5, I chanced upon the Veggie Tales Bible, the new international version made for kids ages 4 to 7 years old. It was a bit expensive at $24.99 but I did not hesitate much. I thought it was good idea for him and me to bond over and finish reading the Bible together. I was so excited to show it to TL#1 and he loved it! He couldn't wait for us to read the stories (verses). We slept past 11 pm that night because he doesn't want to put it down. He had lots of questions, too, which are sometimes difficult to answer and so I ask him back "what do you think?". We both learn as we go. ...

dinosaur fascination

Our soon-to-be 4 year old is very much fascinated with dinosaurs! "Roarrrr! Groooowl! Mommy, I'm a dinosaur! I'm a carnivore, I only eat chicken (and maling, too)!" He's a big dinosaur fan. He knows dinosaur names from A to Z! He was so happy when we bought a dinosaur egg. He couldn't wait for it to hatch! Akala nya siguro lalaki talaga. (We bought the egg in blue magic. I've also seen some in National bookstore .) He was a wee bit disappointed when it did not grow as big as he imagined. His daddy also bought him 4m Glow in the dark mould and paint dinosaur in toy kingdom . He kept bugging his daddy to make the dinosaurs until his daddy reluctantly gave in. Ang kulit lang talaga! He could hardly wait for the mold to set in. Akyat-baba sa hagdan at panay ang tanong kung okay na daw ba. Umeskapo na ang daddy! So I was left with the daunting task of painting the dinosaur. I managed to paint one before I feigned fatigue and sleepiness. Spot the difference! Ha...
